Special: Guardians of the Galaxy

We’ve been waiting with great anticipation since it was announced, and now Guardians of the Galaxy is here! So, like we’ve done a few other times, rather than spend a mere ten minutes on it, we’ve decided to expand our thoughts on the film to a full length episode!

Because we could!

So sit back, relax, and listen to our thoughts on what may be one of the greatest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon… if you’ve seen the movie already.

Because we’re going to spoil the hell out of it.

Trae Dorn

Trae Dorn has been staffing conventions for over twenty-five years. They also wrote and drew the now completed webcomic UnCONventional, and produce the podcasts BS-Free Witchcraft, On This Day With Trae, Stormwood & Associates, The Meatgrinder, and The Nerd & Tie Podcast. This leads many to ask how the heck they have the time to get it all done. Trae says they have the time because they “do it all quite poorly.”

Okay, here we go, yay for numbered points!

    1. There is nothing special about the Spartoi, and Quill’s fatherly relationship there, aside from the fact that Marvel comics have been boosting the prominence of them specifically because they don’t own the film rights to the Shi’ar or Skrulls. While Marvel’s not gonna do anything drastic like cancel FF (like was rumored), they’re not opposed to marginalizing them.
    2. Speaking of the Skrulls, the Chitauri now exist in Earth-616 continuity. They don’t shapeshift, but are related to the Skrulls. Think of them as the Romulans to the Skrulls’ Vulcans.
    3. There really isn’t much motivation given in the film for Ronan mostly due to the time constraint. The editor for this movie deserves to at minimum be nominated for an Oscar. The pacing is fast, but not breakneck, and Gunn throws a TON of exposition at you very quickly.
    4. That wasn’t Galactus. Galactus is a unique being that is wholly tied to the existence of the universe, having existed in the previous one as a mortal and surviving this universe’s birth. There’s… a whole thing on how Galan (his mortal name before ascending to… whatever state you want to call it now) became Galactus and how he’s inseparable from this universe’s existence. What you saw wielding the Reality Gem was indeed a celestial, Eson the Searcher ( http://marvel.wikia.com/Eson_(Earth-616) ). The inclusion of the celestials was amazing. And Galactus cannot be used by Marvel/Disney, Galactus’ film rights are wholly owned by FOX. This is also goes back to why the Chitauri are being used, not Skrulls, because FOX wholly owns those rights too.
    5. I also initially thought Howard the Duck was Fillion’s cameo, but apparently he was somewhere in a scene in the Kyln. From what I’ve been reading, Fillion decided to not go with Howard the Duck, instead opting for a larger role in the MCU at some future time ( http://www.nerdist.com/2014/08/who-was-that-voice-in-the-guardians-of-the-galaxy-end-credits-scene-massive-spoilers/ ) (my money is on either J’Son or Black Bolt).
    6. We actually don’t know if Thanos has any of the infinity gems yet. We’ve now seen the space gem (Tesseract), power gem (AEther), reality gem (the Orb). It’s possible that Loki’s staff had the mind gem in it, too. That leaves at least 2 still unaccounted for.

There’s no shame in that. Before 2007, it was pretty tangential and esoteric. It wasn’t until the DnA era that it started to gather prominence again.
