Was the “Mineorama” Convention the other kind of Con?

So Minecraft conventions just seem cursed — or at least appear to be run by incompetents and/or scam artists. Unofficial Minecraft Convention “Mineorama” appears to be the latter, as it was cancelled a mere five days prior to the event last month and the organizers have vanished with the money.

Back in July, the “BebopVox YOGSCAST” dug into the situation, and released the following video:

It shows the depths of potential corruption involved in this bizarre, highly weird situation.

Since then, as Kotaku and PC Gamer have posted, the website has disappeared, the organizers have vanished, and over half a million dollars is unaccounted for.

This is the fourth bizarre situation to unfold around a Minecraft convention in 2014 alone (the embedded video above mentions them briefly, here’s more details on one of them), and I’m starting to think that said fandom is particularly cursed.

Yep, definitely cursed.

Thanks to Dillon Kaarstad and Jen Oven for the tip!

Trae Dorn

Trae Dorn has been staffing conventions for over twenty-five years. They also wrote and drew the now completed webcomic UnCONventional, and produce the podcasts BS-Free Witchcraft, On This Day With Trae, Stormwood & Associates, The Meatgrinder, and The Nerd & Tie Podcast. This leads many to ask how the heck they have the time to get it all done. Trae says they have the time because they “do it all quite poorly.”
