Japanese Godzilla Returns

Godzilla’s been getting back in his game recently. Most of his movies are on the shelves again and his American  movie did alright at the box office, but Toho Studios has one more plan for the King of Kaiju.

Despite Legendary’s own American produced sequel to Godzilla (2014), Toho will be making their own new (and completely unrelated) Godzilla film, set for 2016.  Toho promises that this film will not “bow down to the Hollywood film.” This would be the first new Toho-produced Godzilla since the Godzilla Final Wars in 2004.

If this means a return for rubber suited Godzilla, I’d be very up for that. That’s half the fun of Tokusatsu, but its too early to say anything beyond that there’s some interesting issues of National identity in relation to film making going on here. I can’t help but remember how Godzilla 2000 was produced in part because of the mishandling of the big guy in Godzilla (1998).

Still, we have two Godzilla movies coming out soon now, so that seems like a good thing.
