Why I’m a Little Worried About the Final Fantasy VII Remake

The full trailer for the upcoming remake of 1990s classic Final Fantasy VII is here. And while the whole thing looks great, I have a few concerns about the game… and you might too.

First off, and this is the big one for me, combat looks much more active than the original FFVII. One of the reasons I liked classic Final Fantasy games is that it was a turn based combat system. I tend to get stressed out playing action games, and don’t enjoy myself. Frankly, that’s just the kind of gamer I am. I have no interest in playing an action game designed to look like Final Fantasy VII. Now, it may be they’ve just redesigned the combat to look more dynamic, but it’s still a bit disconcerting.

The other concern is the rumor that Final Fantasy VII‘s remake will be episodic. If that turns out to be true, I may just end up throwing my hands up in the air. The beauty of VII was how non-linear large parts of the game were. I mean, there are two major characters you can skip entirely and still beat the game. If you change that, I think you’ve suddenly changed the entire DNA of a game like this.

And maybe my concerns are wholly unfounded. Maybe the whole thing will be fine… but I’m still worried right now.
