Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars Spin-Off Film Actually in Development

Ever since Lucasfilm and Disney announced that they would be doing spinoff movies set in the Star Wars universe, fans have been clamoring for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. I mean, Ewan McGregor keeps telling people he’s game for it — and he’s the one thing every Star Wars fan seems to agree was actually good about the Prequel trilogy. But while rumors flew a bunch back in, like, twenty-fourteen the idea didn’t seem to be going anywhere.

Well, that’s no longer the case.

THR is reporting that an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff is definitely in the works now. There’s no script yet, but director Stephen Daldry is currently in talks with the studio to take on the project. Curiously McGregor hasn’t signed on to the film yet, but it’s almost a guarantee that the fans would revolt if he didn’t play the part.

All of this is early on, and we still don’t have a formal announcement from the studio. But while this could all still fall apart, it’s good to know that the studio is listening to what the fans have been clamoring for.

I want this to happen. Only because there is some good potential to come out of this. If I recall at the end of Episode III, his old master had obtain the secret of the Force ghost concept that Obi Wan used in both the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I would love to see Obi Wan interact with Qui Gon Jinn’s force ghost. It would also be interesting to see Obi Wan interact with others on Tatooine as Ben Kenobi. I think there is some potential stories that Disney could make out of this. I could also see Obi Wan battle his own inner dark side as events from Empire unfold and Obi Wan sits in exile trying to make sense of what has happened and what his part was in the events.
