‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Renewed For a Second Season

Well, it’s official — Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed for a second season by CBS All Access. Marc DeBevoise, president and CEO at CBS Interactive, told THR:

In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise […] We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.

We don’t know the actual numbers for CBS All Access, but what that effectively means is “Star Trek: Discovery is the only show anyone is watching on our entire streaming service, please keep paying for it.”

The bad news is that the second season likely won’t hit screens until 2019 at the earliest, though that’s not as far as it seems (as the second half of the first season won’t air until 2018).

Honestly, this is pretty exciting. Discovery may not a be a perfect show, but it’s still a very strong first season for a Star Trek installment all things considered. The fact that CBS is willing to give the show more time to find itself is heartening.

Y’know, assuming CBS All Access doesn’t fold before that second season gets here.
