On this episodes we celebrate Star Trek: Discovery‘s renewal, discuss Doctor Who‘s announced new companions, feel relief at the Han Solo movie finally having a title, get confused at the Settlers of Catan movie, and get elated that Constantine will get to be bisexual on Legends of Tomorrow.
Gen also went to Anime Fusion, and we discuss the differences between Wisconsin and Minnesota cons.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, we talk about the SAG-AFTRA strike against the biggest video game companies out there, Tim Miller exiting Deadpool 2, Donald Glover getting cast as Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo anthology film, we let Nick talk about Shin Godzilla, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 gets a teaser, Logan gets a trailer, and Pher and Nick went to some conventions.
On this episode we mourn the passing of Admiral Ackbar himself Erik Bauersfeld, rejoice in the LEGO Batman movie trailers, and question the petition to bring the R rated cut of Batman v Superman to theaters. We also jump straight into the con scene, remembering the Twin Cities’ closing Thunderbird Hotel, comment on the cancellation of yet ANOTHER Yourminicon event, lament issues with this year’s Karoshi Con, and celebrate Who’s Yer Con and the INDYpendent Show for being awesome.
Last night, multiple conventions were contacted by management at the Ramada Bloomington Minneapolis Airport (aka “The Thunderbird”) informing them that the hotel had been sold to the City of Bloomington and is scheduled to close in the next thirty to sixty days (followed by an eventual demolition in the proceeding months).
This is devastating news to the Minnesota convention scene, as the hotel is home to quite a few local conventions — including 2D Con, MLP-MSP, Anime Fusion, and Tol Con. This is especially damaging for the first two, as both 2D Con and MLP-MSP are scheduled for just over two months from now.
While MLP-MSP hasn’t made any official statements on the matter, 2D Con made an announcement on their Facebook page stating that they are currently looking for a new venue. While October convention Anime Fusion has yet to make an official statement on the matter, Tol Con (scheduled for November) has as well.
Hopefully all of these cons (and any others if I forgot one) can find a new home quickly.
Besides the four listed here, the “Thunderbird” has been the historic home of quite a few other conventions. It’s a part of Minnesota fandom history, and many will be sad to see it go. With one less venue available in the area, the impact this will have on the local con scene in the Twin Cities cannot be underestimated.
This episode of Nerd & Tie is sadly just Pher and Trae, as Nick couldn’t make it back in time from Anime Fusion to record the show. Left to their own devices, the remaining Nerds (and Ties) dig into yesterday’s all too tragic ZombiCon shooting, try to distract themselves with the new Gamera trailer, rejoices at Godzilla vs. King Kong‘s confirmation, ogle the overly detailed Man of Steel’s “Fortress of Solitude” drawn by Frank Miller, get amazed by the return of Starhunter, and recount Pher’s experiences at Anime Fusion.
Which, at the time of recording, Nick had finally left.
Hey Nerd & Tie fans in the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota realms, this weekend Nick and Pher will be hitting Anime Fusion in Bloomington, MN. You’ll find them both at the Nerd & Tie Expo Roadshow Table (where you can preregister for or donate to the event), along with some of our Expo staff.
Both Nick and Pher are doing their standard slew of panels with Otaku Tonight Productions, but they also will be hosting the Anime Fusion Cosplay Contest… which is, y’know, really neat.
So come out, say hi, prereg for the Nerd & Tie Expo if you feel like it, and have an awesome convention with us!
Well I say “us,” but I (Trae) won’t be there. But I wish I could be. Everyone have an awesome time for me, okay?
Reminder: We’re still running an Indiegogo Campaign for the Nerd & Tie Expo. You can find it here! It’s super awesome.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, we briefly discuss the live action Attack on Titan movie, the forthcoming Back to the Future Doc Brown short film, a new Doctor Who spinoff called Class, Prometheus 2 getting a new name, a possible Men in Black reboot sans Will Smith, we let Nick talk about Gundam (Iron Blooded Orphans), and the video game voice actors may end up striking.
On this fortnight’s installment of the podcast, we talk about Squirrel Girl’s upcoming solo series, the complete DC Carnival of Sadness film lineup (including Wonder Woman), Iron Man in Captain America 3, The IT Crowd getting (another) American remake, Pher’s experiences at Anime Fusion and Nick’s opinions on Anime News Network reviewer Theron Martin.
