Special: ‘Doctor Who’ Casts Jodie Whittaker as 13th Doctor

On this SPECIAL EPISODE of Nerd & Tie which we weren’t expecting to actually record, we discuss the casting of Doctor Who‘s thirteenth Doctor. Jodie Whittaker will be taking over as the eponymous Time Lord, and we share our thoughts, how parts of the internet lost their collective minds (due to more than one X chromosome), and then dig into a bunch of Doctor Who randomness to fill time!

Also, we’re sorry it’s a little quiet — we’re still trying to get the sound right in the new studio.

Holy Crap, Jodie Whittaker is the Thirteenth Doctor!

When we learned Peter Capaldi was exiting Doctor Who with this year’s Christmas special, we were honestly saddened. But like with all regenerations of the legendary Time Lord, we immediately got excited trying to guess who would take on the part. Well, the guessing is over, as earlier today the BBC announced that the thirteenth Doctor will be none other than Jodie Whittaker.

Whittaker is best known for Broadchurch, which was created by incoming Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall. She’s also appeared in films like Venus and 2011’s Attack the Block. Oh, and we should probably mention this somewhere, she’s a woman.

At several points in series ten, the show went out of its way to remind the audience that Time Lords could change genders during regenerations. Many hoped that these were clues that we’d see a woman playing the Doctor’s next incarnation, and sometimes it’s very nice to not be disappointed. Capaldi’s shoes are going to be hard to fill, as he’s arguably one of the best Doctors on record. That said, Whittaker is an incredibly talented performer, and should bring something new to the character (beyond her gender).

This is just neat.

John Simm Will Reprise His Role as The Master in ‘Doctor Who’ Series 10

In a turn of events I’m sure most of us didn’t expect, John Simm will be stepping back into the role of The Master this upcoming series of Doctor Who. Simm last played the character in 2010, during David Tennant’s final story as The Doctor.

Michelle Gomez took over the part a couple of series ago, and will also appear this series. She’s not leaving the part any time soon though, as Simm’s Master will appear via time travel. In all likelihood we’re getting a multiple Master story, and that’s probably one of the more exciting things I could think of. Gomez and Simm are both phenomenal at chewing the scenery, and putting them both onscreen together is probably my favorite idea ever.

Doctor Who returns to the air April 15th, with the story featuring The Master(s) later in the series.

Episode 95 – A Pair of (April) Fools

On this episode of the Nerd & Tie podcast we mourn the passing of Bernie Wrightson, ponder the new Justice League trailer, discuss The Flash‘s villain plans for Season Four, rejoice in the pending return of iZombie, have a good think about the Doctor Who series ten trailer, talk a bit about Iron Fist, continue to monitor the developing MST3K situation, and remind you that New York Comic Con is only offering day passes this year.

We went audio only episode, and do you think we sound different? I’m not so sure…

We’re Pretty Excited About the ‘Doctor Who’ Series 10 Trailer

Last night the BBC dropped a new trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who, and I’m pretty sure it elicited the exact reaction in us they were hoping for. I mean, when you’ve been watching a show since you were a small child, it’s always hard not to get excited about new episodes.

The trailer doesn’t tell us much we didn’t already know. It confirms Missy will be back in some form this season, and there are a few glimpses of the original ’60s Cybermen too. All and all, it’s the trailer we expect for Capaldi’s final run as The Doctor… but that’s pretty much all we needed.

Doctor Who series 10 begins airing April 15th.

Episode 94 – Face Stabbing Reluctant Murder Dad

On this episode of Nerd & Tie we discuss the forthcoming return of the old school Cybermen to Doctor Who, how Logan is a film that finally does Wolverine justice, Twitch’s decision to stream all 831 episodes of Power Rangers, and then we dive into the con scene.

And we dive deep.

It’s a bit complicated, because comic writer Tom Taylor won’t do US based cons anymore, Phoenix Comicon sent out a third party survey that got weird, Anime Fan Fest has called it quits, STX Brazos Comic Con is incommunicado with its debtors, and the internet lost its sh*t because a small collectibles show called Elite Con banned cosplay.

And for some reason, we didn’t have anything readable in the mailbag. That hasn’t happened for a while.

‘Doctor Who’ Series 10 Is Bringing Back the Original Cybermen — And We Do Mean ORIGINAL

In the classic Doctor Who, the villainous Cybermen came from the planet Mondas, the “twin planet of Earth.” When the series came back over a decade ago though, the Cybermen who first showed up instead came from an alternate universe and were created by the Cybus Industries. Now, while those Cybus Cybermen showed up a few times, eventually the original Mondas Cybermen resurfaced — but due to budget limitations of the show, variants of the Cybus Cybermen costumes were used.

Well, fans of the classic Cybermen look can rejoice, because we’re getting the original Cybermen back – and thanks to a tweet from the official Doctor Who twitter, we do mean original.

That’s right, the twelfth Doctor is going to take on Cybermen who look an awful lot like the ones the first Doctor faced in 1966’s The Tenth Planet. As the episodes will apparently be the 11th and 12th aired, it seems like that’s how we’ll be ending Capadli’s final series (as he will regenerate into 13 at the end of the Christmas special). Seems like a fun way to go out.

Episode 92 – Bat/Bad Dads

On this episode of Nerd & Tie we mourn the passing of Richard Hatch, celebrate the joy that is The Lego Batman Movie, consider Ben Affleck’s departure from The Batman‘s director’s chair, and prematurely miss Peter Capaldi leaving Doctor Who. Then it’s on to the con scene, where Eternal Con organizer Frank Patz has gotten himself banned from New York Comic Con (and all ReedPop events), STX Brazos Valley Comic Con guests are getting charged for hotel rooms that were supposedly paid for, and Crunchyroll has decided that Northern California totally needs another anime convention.

Just like most of us need another hole in the head.

Peter Capaldi Will Leave ‘Doctor Who’ at the End of This Year

Peter Capaldi’s time on Doctor Who has been pretty impressive, and Series 9 was probably the strongest part of Steven Moffat’s soon ending run. But even though we still have Series 10 to look forward to with the twelfth Doctor, it appears it will be the last hurrah.

The BBC tweeted out the following earlier today:

The official Doctor Who Twitter went on to clarify that the 2017 Christmas Special was going to be his final episode in the role.

While this still means we have plenty of time with Capaldi’s Twelve, it’s sad to see him go. This means that as Steven Moffat steps down as showrunner, new showrunner Chris Chibnall will get to start with a fresh actor taking over our titular Timelord’s shoes. Honestly, I’m a little disappointed, as I would have loved to have seen what Capaldi and Chibnall could have done together.

There’s a New Teaser Trailer for the ‘Doctor Who’ Spinoff ‘Class’

We’ve been excited about the new Doctor Who spinoff Class since it was announced, and as its premiere (which includes an appearance of Peter Capaldi) is creeping up on us. Because of that, the BBC has released an official teaser trailer for the series.

And it’ll hopefully get you as hyped as we are.

Class premieres on BBC Three on October 22nd.
