Sony’s Spider-Man Adjacent ‘Silver and Black’ Has a Release Date

Sony’s ongoing attempt to build a Spider-Man-adjacent shared universe, which isn’t connected to the MCU but somehow connected to the MCU’s Spider-Man, continues forward. One of the films in the pipe for this bizarre experiment is Silver and Black, a movie focused on Silver Sable and Black Cat.

What we knew already is that film has a script by Chris Yost and is being directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. What we’ve learned in the last few days is that Sony has stamped a nice big release date on the film: February 8, 2019.

While this may seem more out of left field than the Venom movie, these are at least two characters whose origins aren’t heavily dependent on Spider-Man existing. That Venom movie is coming out just four months beforehand though, so it just feels like Sony’s trying to cram as much as they can at us at once.

I guess we’ll see if any of it sticks to the wall.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man MIGHT Show Up in Sony’s Marvel Universe

One of the stranger things that’s been happening is that Sony has been moving forward with the “Sony Marvel Universe” films, based around Spider-Man characters… minus Spider-Man. I mean, envisioning a Venom movie without Spider-Man is pretty strange, right? Well, the two franchises (which also includes the Black Cat and Silver Sable movie Silver and Black) aren’t going to be so far apart apparently.

Maybe.

In an interview with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal, Pascal seemed to confirm that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could show up in the spin-off movies still.

This is, of course, completely contrary to Feige’s previous statements where he said the Venom movie wouldn’t be in the MCU. Of course, since Feige seemed a little surprised in the interview, maybe this was news to him too.

Sony’s Silver Sable and Black Cat Movie Has a New Title and Director

Earlier this year we learned that Sony was making a Silver Sable and Black Cat movie. This is, of course, all part of the studio’s bizarre efforts to build a Spider-Man based shared universe sans actual Spider-Man.

Well, the project is moving forward, no matter how strange. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the director’s chair has been filled by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Prince-Bythewood is probably best known for writing and directing The Secret Life of Bees. The movie also apparently has a title now — Silver and Black.

I’m really not sure what I think about this thing. I mean, yeah – it’s a superhero film with women both headlining and directing. I’m all for that. What I don’t understand is the logic of pairing these two characters, as it’s not like they’re closely associated with each other.

Of course, doing things logically has never really been Sony’s thing.

Sony Developing ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff Starring Silver Sable and Black Cat

A few years ago, before Sony’s plans for an expanded Spider-verse based on their Amazing version of the character collapsed, they were planning a woman led spin-off which would likely feature either Black Cat or Silver Sable. Like most movies associated with that proposed franchise expansion, it was assumed that the project was long dead and buried.

Well maybe not so much.

THR is reporting that Sony is currently developing a film based around both Silver Sable and Black Cat. The studio has tapped Chris Yost to write the script, who recently wrote the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok for Marvel. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing.

This isn’t Sony’s only Spider-Man spinoff in development, with a Venom movie recently announced to be in the works (which even has a release date). It’s unclear if these will be anchored in Marvel’s MCU, but as the current Spider-Man is, it would be super weird if they weren’t.

I guess we’ll see what happens.

Sony Working On Female-Hero Led Spider-verse Film

So with Kevin Fiege saying that they just don’t have time to do a woman led Superhero movie over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it comes as a bit of a surprise to find out that Sony is working on a female superhero led film in their Spider-man franchise.

Deadline reports that Sony is aiming for a 2017 release date, but little else is known. While my money is on Black Cat (as we’ve already been introduced to her in Amazing Spider-Man 2), there are other Spider-man related characters (Firestar, Spider-woman, Silver Sable) who could be the lead.

In any case, it’s nice to see that at least one studio making superhero films right now is willing to take the risk and make a woman-led film in the genre.

Let’s hope it starts a trend.
