The New Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Bright’ is Full of Elves, Orcs, and Explosions

Another trailer dropped for Bright this week, and Netflix’s first foray into blockbuster film making continues to look really, really good. It hits the same notes that we’ve seen in earlier promotional materials for the film.

Will Smith plays a cop who gets assigned an Orcish partner (played by Joel Edgerton). There’s tension between them (as there’s an obvious racism allegory happening with the Orcs), and the two run across someone with a magic wand. A magic wand is, apparrently, “like a nuclear bomb that grants wishes.”

So, y’know, a little bit of a big deal.

This is the most I’ve ever been excited about a David Ayer film in my life. I mean, it’s a buddy cop modern fantasy film — we haven’t exactly seen that before. Getting something new out of Hollywood apparently took a streaming service.

Bright hits Netflix on December 22nd.

The New Trailer for Netflix’s Movie ‘Bright’ Looks Really Cool

Netflix has been making some amazing television series and smaller films, but their upcoming movie Bright is their first foray into big budget, $100 million blockbusters. Set in a modern world, but with all the accoutrements of a fantasy setting, Will Smith plays a cop who’s partnered with an Orc.

I mean, it looks like a buddy cop fantasy action explosion fest, and I couldn’t be happier. I mean sure, it’s David Ayer directing — but as bad as Suicide Squad was, the man did write Training Day and direct End of Watch too. Ayer’s capable of good movies, and this seems to have more in common with his cop movies than his time spent in the comic book world. I’m more than willing to give this movie a shot.

Bright comes out on Netflix December 22nd.

The First Teaser For Netflix’s ‘Bright’ is Here

Netflix is spending $90 million dollars on a fantasy action movie starring Will Smith, and we’ve now gotten to see the first promo for it. The film, Bright, is set in a modern world that just happens to be filled with Orc and Elves. So, it’s kind of like Shadowrun, but different enough where they won’t get sued.

Will Smith plays a cop who is partnered with an Orc, and the two of them have to stop some sort of doomsday thingamajig. I mean, it sounds good, but I’m still a bit skeptical since David Ayer is directing. is From what we can tell, Netflix is looking to start a franchise with this film, so we’ll see how it goes.

Bright comes to Netflix this December.

Episode 88 – Space-Opera-Palooza

On this episode of Nerd & Tie (and its triumphant return to video), we discuss Sonequa Martin-Green’s casting as the lead in Star Trek: Discovery, David Ayer potentially directing Gotham City Sirens, discuss the amazing Rogue One, contemplate the official cancellation of the con Anime Apocalypse, and examine the trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

We also take the time to mock Michael Bay, but only because he deserves it.

David Ayer Will Direct ‘Gotham City Sirens’ Movie, Margot Robbie to Star

File this under “Good News/Bad News,” because it looks like we’re going to get another DC movie with women leads in the form of Gotham City Sirens. The Bad news, of course, is that David “I am a terrible director” Ayer will be directing.

The Hollywood Reporter has the story, and Margot Robbie (who played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad) is slated to reprise her role. Geneva Robertson-Dworet will write the screenplay.

We don’t know much else about the project, but we can assume (based on the title) that it will be in the same vein as the Gotham City Sirens comic, which featured Quinn, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and others. It’s like, on the one hand, I like the idea of more women led action films, but on the other hand… David Ayer? I mean, sure Suicide Squad made money, but it was a hash of a film. There was a plot in there, but the film was so poorly structured it was nigh unwatchable.

There’s no release date for the film, but Warner Bros is clearly making it a priority.

Netflix Signs $90 Million Deal to Make ‘Bright’

Netflix’s original studios have been killing it with original television and independent film, but it looks like the online service is intending to step into the movie big leagues. Deadline is reporting that Netflix has now spent $90 million on a project called Bright.

A scifi/fantasy cop thriller scripted by Max Landis, Bright will star Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. David Ayer will direct the film. The film will cost $45 to film, which means the rest of the budget will pretty much end up in the pockets of its stars — mostly to buy out the backend. Unlike a traditional Hollywood film, there just won’t be one on a Netflix made film.

It’s an ambitious move for Netflix, and it’ll also be pretty hard to tell if it pays off or not (as the service is subscription based). But the fact that the company is edging into larger budget productions is an interesting development, and let’s hope the gamble pays off.
