Hey everyone, it’s time for our annual year in review special, where we talk about the best and worst things that came out over the span of 2016. We go through our picks for movies, new television shows, video games, comics, conventions, and things to come out of Japan. It’s a pretty broad scope. Before that though, we take a moment to remember the late Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, who passed since our last episode.
Which is pretty damned sad.
This is also Pher’s last episode on the podcast, and we bid him a fond farewell.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, we talk about the SAG-AFTRA strike against the biggest video game companies out there, Tim Miller exiting Deadpool 2, Donald Glover getting cast as Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo anthology film, we let Nick talk about Shin Godzilla, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 gets a teaser, Logan gets a trailer, and Pher and Nick went to some conventions.
Back in July we found out Toho’s latest Godzilla film, Shin Godzilla, would get a limited run in American theaters thanks to Funimation. Well, we now have a trailer for that release… and it sure is a trailer.
Don’t expect to see anything new, or to hear any dialogue (as the release will have subtitles that probably aren’t perfected yet), but here it is… all trailer like.
Shin Godzilla will appear in American theaters from October 11-18.
Recorded before a live audience at the lovely Chula Vista Resort in the Wisconsin Dells, on this live episode of Nerd & Tie we discuss the first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer, let Nick fanboy about the Godzilla Resurgence trailer, continue to look closely at the ever living clusterf**k that is Wine Country Comic Con, roll our eyes at YourMiniCon’s mounting issues, and contemplate Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s title.
Oh, and we talk directly to some of you while you’re in the room — and try to start a rumor that Sean Corse of Famicom Dojo got mauled by a gazelle.
Live shows are fun like that. No Brand Con shows especially.
While we really liked Legendary’s Godzilla, there are some who are only willing to accept the most famous Kaiju in the world if he’s played by a guy in a rubber suit. And hey, who can blame them? Original formula Godzilla is pretty friggin’ cool.
Toho, of course, has been completely on top of this, announcing Godzilla Resurgence (aka Shin Godzilla) about a year and a half ago. We got the first teaser for the Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi co-directed film in December, but it really didn’t tell anyone much about the film.
Now though… now we have the full trailer.
Of course, it still doesn’t tell us that much about the actual movie — but at least it establishes the look for the audience. Frankly, if the trailer is anything to go on, this may be the most visually interesting Toho produced Godzilla film in decades.
No word on when we’ll see an English language release, but Godzilla Resurgence hits theaters in Japan on July 29, 2016.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, we tackle Toho’s new Godzilla design, CBS is suing the creators of Star Trek fan film Axanar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is crushing it at the box office, Hasbro can’t get things right with Rey, and No Boys Dorm just kind of kicks ass.
We finally have a look Godzilla as the big beast will appear in Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s Godzilla: Resurgence and… well look at it!
A mess of teeth, a body that looks like its covered by one big nuclear burn, its deformed right arm…
I know this isn’t going to be a popular opinion, but I love this. Its new and more importantly, its horrifying. Its worth noting that this might not be the final design. Computer touch-ups may still happen, which is what made live action Attack on Titan look like crap, but for now I’m very psyched to see this monster.
On this episode of the podcast we discuss the new Godzilla Resurgence teaser, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 trailer excites, the Batman v. Superman trailer confounds, Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s Kickstarter breaks records, some lady went and bit Norman Reedus at Walker Stalker Con, and Touhou Con needs to get their act together and pay back their artists.
With the success of Legendary’s 2014 American reboot of the Godzilla franchise, Toho was fast to jump back into the world of producing their own Godzilla films after taking a break for a decade. We first learned about their new iteration a year ago, and last spring we found out Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi would co-direct the film. Time marches on though, and we finally have a few more breadcrumbs about the project.
Well, we have a poster and what can barely be called a teaser trailer.
Toho released two versions of the poster for the film — one in Japanese and one in English.
The “teaser” put out for the film is pretty straight forward — people running from something. One presumes it’s Godzilla they’re running from, but since we don’t actually see it, we’ll just have to guess.
As marketing goes, it’s pretty simple – but I’m still excited. I mean, the more Godzilla we get to see, the better. I don’t expect it to look as good as the Legendary films, but I think it’ll make up for it with (probably) a better plot.
No word on when we’ll see an English language release, but Godzilla: Resurgence hits theaters in Japan on July 29, 2016.
On this episode we talk about the announced animated Batman movie starring Adam West and Burt Ward, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi taking the reigns of Godzilla 2016, the X-Files limited series being confirmed, Sony’s bizarre desire to make a Robotech film franchise, Gen Con’s reactions to Indiana’s RFRA, and an awesome little convention in DeKalb called Karoshi Con.
And we have a whole bunch of new listener mail to boot!
