Fox Renews ‘Gotham’ and ‘Last Man on Earth’

Fox made two big renewals today – one of which we’re pretty excited about, and the other we’re just kind of indifferent on at this point. Those two shows, of course, are Last Man on Earth and Gotham.

To be fair, we kind of expected Gotham to come back another season, even if we’re not big fans of the show. I’m honestly not sure exactly who is watching the show still, but the ratings show that someone is. I guess it kind of goes to show that regardless of something’s quality, if it’s Batman-adjacent, people will pay attention.

Last Man on Earth, on the other hand, we’re really happy about. I’ll go so far to say that it’s the best post-Apocalyptic show currently on the air (take that AMC). The idea that we’ll get to spend more time with the wacky band of survivors is pretty damn exciting.

The network already renewed Lucifer and picked up Marvel’s The Gifted, so even with Sleepy Hollow ending, the network has a pretty solid genre lineup for next year. I mean, even if one of those shows is Gotham.

Is a ‘Pennyworth’ Spinoff of ‘Gotham’ in Development?

While it’s true we’re pretty big fans of most of DC Comic’s TV adaptations (CBS’s Supergirl and The CW’s The Flash especially), we haven’t kept our disdain of Fox’s Gotham a secret. We’re so annoyed with it, we gave up even writing snarky recaps of the show after half a season. That’s why, honestly, it’s the last corner of DC’s TV Multiverse that we’d want to see expanded.

Unfortunately, there’s a small chance it might happen.

It’s been reported that DC Entertainment has registered a trademark for “Pennyworth” as a “live-action, dramatic comedy television series.” Now it’s true that’s not a lot to go on, and this may not be related to Gotham at all… but since the character’s IP is currently being used on that series, it only makes sense that this is where the “live action” iteration would come from.

This is all super-early stages, so it’s possible nothing will come from any of this. It’s possible no show ever materializes… but woe to the television viewing public if it does.

Paul Reubens Will Play the Penguin’s Father… Again

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Paul Reubens has been cast to play the father of Oswald Cobblepot on Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham.

We’ve seen plenty of the Penguin’s mother (played by Carol Kane) on Gotham, so it will be interesting how this character will be handled… or at the very least, how he’ll be described in the exceptionally entertaining Arcemise recaps.

Reubens (best known for his Pee Wee Herman character) will be playing the character for a second time, having originally played the Penguin’s father in Batman Returns twenty-three years ago. Ironically, as Reubens bares little resemblance to Danny Devito’s Penguin from that film, he actually does look a lot like Gotham‘s Robin Lord Taylor.

Gotham airs Monday nights on Fox.
