I think it’s pretty safe to assume that most readers of this blog are fans of Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which came out earlier this year. One of the more fun little tidbits came during the film’s end credits, when a disco remix of the Guardians of the Galaxy theme played. Featuring vocals by David “Zardu Hasselfrau” Hasselhoff himself, it was the perfect way to end the movie.
Well, in promotion of the digital release on August 8th and blu-ray on August 22nd, the studio has gone and created a late-70s aesthetic music video for the song. Featuring most of the film’s cast and director James Gunn, it’s just… it’s just perfect. Large parts of it remind me of Hot Gossip’s “I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper,” which will always hold a special place in my heart.
So enjoy the video and go forth to conquer your week.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, Trae rambles incoherently for ten minutes about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. After that, we discuss how Stan Lee has (probably) been playing Uatu in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, lament Young Justice and Titans getting shunted off onto yet another streaming service, and then tackle this fortnight’s convention news.
In the con scene, Midwest Media Expo got cancelled days before their event, Missouri’s Oz Con had to be cancelled mid event due to historic flooding, and police are looking for information about a Maryland man who allegedly has been soliciting sex from minors at cons.
It’s been known for a while that Sylvester Stallone would appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but his exact role has been kept under wraps. All we knew is that it probably wouldn’t be a large part, though still likely a known character from the Marvel comics.
And now we know who that is.
This is the part where I give you the normal spoiler warnings. If you don’t want to know more, don’t go any further. This is your last chance to turn back.
James Gunn is ramping up to do press for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which comes out in just under three weeks. The writer and director took to Facebook earlier today to talk about it, along with some of the questions he expects to get a lot during the barrage of press junkets and interviews he’s about to engage in.
In that post, embedded above, Gunn answers a question most of us didn’t expect to get an answer to for quite some time: whether or not he would return to write and direct for the franchise’s third installment.
The answer is, of course, yes.
This is welcome news for Guardians of the Galaxy fans, as Gunn has taken what was a C-list set of Marvel comics characters and turned it into one of the biggest titles in the MCU’s lineup. Frankly, the first film was a fairly amazing space opera on its own, and to characterize it as a superhero film would be to misunderstand what makes it a great movie.
To say we love the movie Guardians of the Galaxy here at Nerd & Tie is an understatement, and ever since a sequel was announced we’ve been waiting with bated breath. We’ve gotten a couple of trailers so far, and last night another dropped for the film.
And it’s pretty amazing.
The trailer introduces the antagonists for the film as well as finally give us a look at Star Lord’s father at the tail end. Frankly, a lot of it is explosions set to classic rock, but that’s all we really wanted anyway. Personally, I’m pretty damned hyped.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017.
Look, it’s commonly accepted wisdom that only a minority of nerds and geeks really care about organized sports. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with liking sports, but it’s just not as common in our community as it is in the rest of the general populace.
That said, every year during the Super Bowl ads for things us geeks are extremely interested in debut, and we really want to see them. To help out those of you who chose to skip Sunday’s game though, we’ve rounded up most of them right here… because we’re good people.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie (and its triumphant return to video), we discuss Sonequa Martin-Green’s casting as the lead in Star Trek: Discovery, David Ayer potentially directing Gotham City Sirens, discuss the amazing Rogue One, contemplate the official cancellation of the con Anime Apocalypse, and examine the trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
We also take the time to mock Michael Bay, but only because he deserves it.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, we talk about the SAG-AFTRA strike against the biggest video game companies out there, Tim Miller exiting Deadpool 2, Donald Glover getting cast as Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo anthology film, we let Nick talk about Shin Godzilla, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 gets a teaser, Logan gets a trailer, and Pher and Nick went to some conventions.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy was our pick for the best movie of 2014. Frankly, it was just an amazing science fiction film crammed into a superhero shared universe, and it had an amazing soundtrack. Frankly, it should come as no surprise that we’re pretty hyped up about the sequel coming out next year.
And Marvel wants you to be hyped up about it too.
Yesterday they released the first teaser footage from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it’s looking pretty damned good. What we see is the blend of action and humor we expect from the franchise… and not a lot else. I mean, it’s a teaser — if it gave away anything else, it would be doing its job wrong.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017.
