James Gunn Will Write and Direct the Third ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Movie

James Gunn is ramping up to do press for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which comes out in just under three weeks. The writer and director took to Facebook earlier today to talk about it, along with some of the questions he expects to get a lot during the barrage of press junkets and interviews he’s about to engage in.

In that post, embedded above, Gunn answers a question most of us didn’t expect to get an answer to for quite some time: whether or not he would return to write and direct for the franchise’s third installment.

The answer is, of course, yes.

This is welcome news for Guardians of the Galaxy fans, as Gunn has taken what was a C-list set of Marvel comics characters and turned it into one of the biggest titles in the MCU’s lineup. Frankly, the first film was a fairly amazing space opera on its own, and to characterize it as a superhero film would be to misunderstand what makes it a great movie.

So yeah, I’m excited.

Official Photography Has Started on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We’re big fans of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. It was fun, it was exciting, and it was in space — three things we’re really into. And while it was ostensibly a superhero movie, it was honestly much more of a light space opera.

One we’re pretty ecstatic is getting a sequel.

Well, we’re happy to say that filming has begun on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as director James Gunn posted an image to Facebook saying he was “stoked” that photography had begun. Gunn also confirmed that Kurt Russell is officially a part of the film’s cast, joining other newcomers Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Chris Sullivan.

Rounding out the rest of the cast, of course, are the returning Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Glenn Close.

Honestly? I don’t think we could be anymore hyped about this movie, and 2017 (which will give us both this and Star Wars Episode VIII) is going to be a pretty great year.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017.

The Script For Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Has a First Draft

According to a post on Twitter, James Gunn has officially completed the first draft for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

An additional post on Facebook, he completed the script after writing for forty-eight days straight.

Which sounds exhausting, honestly.

The film is still quite a ways away, but it’s good to know serious progress has been made on the project. With Guardians, James Gunn is in a unique position as many of the characters the cast interacts with in the comics are currently in the possession of Fox – which means Gunn has to find new, unique ways to expand the story. Here’s hoping he pulls it off.

I have faith in him at least.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to come out in May of 2017.

Why it Took Forever to Get a “Dancing Groot” Toy

Many of us wondered, upon Guardians of the Galaxy‘s release, a “Dancing Groot” toy wasn’t immediately on the shelves. I mean, it’s a phenomenal moment in the film, and I think every single one of us who saw the movie immediately wanted to have a little Groot for ourselves (which we can finally get pretty soon). It seemed like missed marketing opportunity not to have them available immediately though, and we wondered why they hadn’t thought of it sooner.

Well, it seems like they did think of it. Director James Gunn, when talking to Vulture said:

“While we were still shooting the movie, I brought up putting Dancing Baby Groot out as a toy,” he said. “The reason it didn’t happen is because you have some control in the film industry over secrets getting out there, but the people you don’t have much control over are the toy people, unfortunately. Those toy designs get out, always! And people definitely would have gotten ahold of the Baby Groot if we had started manufacturing it in time for it to come out after the movie, so that was the biggest reason we didn’t push on that particular element.”

It’s true that the Dancing Groot would be a major spoiler (I SAY TO THE JERKS WHO PUT OUT A TON OF FAN ART OF DANCING GROOT ON TUMBLR OPENING NIGHT FOR THE MOVIE WHICH ENDED UP SPOILING THAT BIT FOR ME HOURS BEFORE GOING TO THE THEATER), and I can understand Gunn’s reluctance to ruin that bit for millions of theater goers.

It’s nice to see a director care more about the film than the merchandising.

Peter Quill’s Dad Isn’t Who You Think It Is

…well, in the movies at least.

Part of the mystery of Guardians of the Galaxy is that we don’t know who Peter “Star-lord” Quill’s dad is. Now, comics readers had a pretty good clue since it’s well established canon in Marvel’s main continuity… but that knowledge is apparently inapplicable for the Cinematic Universe. Director James Gunn, while talking with Empire said:

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us,” says Gunn. “That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

Importantly, Gunn had a major revelation for fans trying to work out who Peter Quill’s father might be. “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.”

So… yeah. Quill’s father won’t be J’Son, Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, in the movies.

Huh.
