2015’s Jurassic World may not have been the best movie, but it was certainly financially successful. I mean, it was a half-decent Jurassic Park movie, and watching dinosaurs eat people can be fun — well, except for the bit with Katie McGrath.
That was just bizarrely unnecessary and weird.
Anywho, with its success a sequel was inevitable – and now we have the first trailer for it. I don’t have much to say about the trailer, mostly because it’s a bunch of action pieces. I mean, it looks alright, and I’m excited to see Jeff Goldblum back as Dr. Ian Malcolm… but I just don’t have high expectations though.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom comes out June 22, 2018.
We haven’t seen Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm since the second Jurassic Park film, but that’s apparently going to change. THR is reporting that Goldblum has joined the cast to the upcoming sequel to 2015’s Jurassic World.
The still untitled fifth film in the Jurassic Park franchise will also see the return of Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and is being directed by J.A. Bayona. Goldblum’s Dr. Malcolm will only be the second character from the original trilogy to appear in the rebooted franchise, and marks the first major character to return. Since Malcolm is arguably the best character in the first film (and arguably the only reason the second film is watchable), this is pretty exciting.
The still untitled Jurassic World sequel will be released June 22, 2018.
With how well Jurassic World did at the box office, it was no surprise when a sequel was announced last year. Director Colin Trevorrow will have a bit on his plate though, directing a Star Wars, so we knew someone else was going to have to take over the director’s chair.
And now we know who.
Yesterday it was announced on twitter that director J.A. Bayona would take over the film on both his and Colin Trevorrow‘s twitter accounts. Bayona isn’t exactly a household name, though he has more films under his belt than Trevorrow did when he tackled last year’s Jurassic World.
While I enjoyed Jurassic World as a film, it was far more of an action adventure than the earlier entries in the franchise. One of the things I loved about the original Jurassic Park was how scary and tense some scenes were — and I felt that was absent from the soft-reboot. Hopefully Bayona (whose debut film The Orphanage was pretty terrifying) can bring some of that suspense back to the franchise.
Jurassic World 2 (or whatever they’ll call it) is currently scheduled to come out June 22, 2018.
There’s no doubt that Jurassic World, the fourth film in the Jurassic Park franchise, was a massive success. It’s been breaking box office records left and right. Because of that, no one should be surprised then that Universal has confirmed they are making a sequel.
A sequel that will be out June 22nd 2018.
Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to return, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. Jurassic World co-writer and director Colin Trevorrow will cowrite the script along side his frequen collaborator Derek Connolly, although Trevorrow won’t direct again as he’ll be off shooting a Star Wars movie.
Personally, I think this is great, as I’ve always loved this franchise. Hopefully they’ll flesh out the human characters a bit more in this next installment though.
On this fortnight’s episode we mourn the loss of Christopher Lee, discuss Jurassic World‘s amazing box office record, gawk at the release of Mother in the US for the first time, rejoice for the announcement of Shenmue 3, let out a sigh of relief for the American Gods TV show moving forward, let Nick talk about the Cyborg 009/Devilman crossover, and stare puzzled into the abyss at the incompetence of Saskatoon Blitz.
Also, Trae’s going to Oz Con next weekend in West Plains, MO. You should come.
Look, we’re pretty aware of our demographics here at Nerd & Tie. We know that a lot of you didn’t watch the Superbowl, because we know that only about a third of nerds and geeks care about sports. We know that because there are three of us, and only Pher cares about sports.
It’s very scientific.
But since the vast majority of the United States tunes into the Superbowl every year, it means a lot of new ads and teasers for big properties get aired during it… and we definitely care about those.
So, for all of you who chose not to tune in yesterday for one reason or another, here’s a collection of stuff you might have been interested in. And please forgive the fact that sometimes you have to watch an ad longer than the commercial you’re trying to get to. The internet is stupid that way.
So, in all honesty, we’re really looking forward to Jurassic World here at Nerd & Tie. Not because it’s necessarily going to be a good movie, but because it looks absolutely ridiculous… and we kind of love that. One of the major plot points in this fourth Jurassic Park film is that the scientists have “cooked up” a new kind of dinosaur “in that lab.” It’s name? The Indominus Rex.
And now we know what it’ll look like. Sort of.
A teaser image of just the snout along with a basic profile image have been released. They give a pretty good idea of what the creature is going to look like:
I honestly never thought I’d be this excited about a film that I expect to be this bad.
So obviously with the holiday this week, we’ve been lagging a bit behind here at Nerd & Tie. But we didn’t want too much to fall by the wayside when two new trailers were out this week for films we’re excited about: Jurassic World (because y’know, Chris Pratt + Dinosaurs) and Episode VII (because, y’know, STAR WARS).
