On this, our officially longest ever episode of Nerd & Tie, we celebrate Invader Zim‘s impending return, discuss John Simm’s returning as The Master on Doctor Who, lose our minds over the New Warriors television show (featuring Squirrel Girl), contemplate Rainn Wilson’s casting as Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery, and speculate on the possibility of a Joss Whedon written/directed Batgirl movie.
Then we tackle the con scene, where Angry Goat Productions continues to do things that are absolutely insane, and AnachroCon’s management seems to have devolved into complete anarchy. We also talk about the great time we had at Karoshi Con, and look forward to No Brand Con.
Plus, y’know, there’s a mailbag. This episode is just full of stuff.
We’re not doing as many cons this Spring as we have sometimes in the past, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be out in the world! The three of us are going to be hitting up a couple of cons in the upcoming weeks, and we want to make sure you know where we’ll be.
First off, all three of us will be at two different cons in April:
Karoshi Con – April 8, 2017
Northern Illinois University – Dekalb, IL
No Brand Con – April 21-23, 2017
Chula Vista Resort – Wisconsin Dells, WI
It’s unknown if we’re doing a live show at either event, though there will be (at the very least) “secret podcasts” recorded at both events. Also, you will find Gen and I (Trae) in the Artist Alley at both events, and Nick helping his wife’s table at Karoshi.
I will also be on my own at the INDYpendent Show in Indianapolis, IN on Sunday, April 2nd. The INDYpendent Show is a small press and independent comics show held in conjunction with Who’s Yer Con, and admission is free.
On this episode we mourn the passing of Admiral Ackbar himself Erik Bauersfeld, rejoice in the LEGO Batman movie trailers, and question the petition to bring the R rated cut of Batman v Superman to theaters. We also jump straight into the con scene, remembering the Twin Cities’ closing Thunderbird Hotel, comment on the cancellation of yet ANOTHER Yourminicon event, lament issues with this year’s Karoshi Con, and celebrate Who’s Yer Con and the INDYpendent Show for being awesome.
So we know it’s a tad last minute, but did you know you could spend Sunday, April 3rd with either Nerd & Tie’s Nick Izumi or me (Trae Dorn)? Well, you can! Both Nick and Trae are going to be at two different events at the same time — in two different cities!
Nick will be at Karoshi Con at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL. You can find him in the vendor room at the Ineffective Carnivore table, and I’m certain he’d love to see you. Ask him how his wedding was (spoilers: it was awesome).
I (Trae) will be elsewhere, down at the Spring INDYpendent Show in Indianapolis, IN. Held in conjunction with Who’s Yer Con at the Wyndham West Hotel and Convention Center, I’ll be selling comics and doing demos on Sunday. I will also tell you about Nick’s wedding if you want, but I’m not sure why you’d ask me.
So yeah, it’s all very exciting. For those of you who want to see us in the same place though you’ll have to wait a little longer… and by that I mean two weeks when No Brand Con comes around in the Wisconsin Dells.
On this episode we talk about the announced animated Batman movie starring Adam West and Burt Ward, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi taking the reigns of Godzilla 2016, the X-Files limited series being confirmed, Sony’s bizarre desire to make a Robotech film franchise, Gen Con’s reactions to Indiana’s RFRA, and an awesome little convention in DeKalb called Karoshi Con.
And we have a whole bunch of new listener mail to boot!
On this episode of Nerd & Tie we remember the late Terry Pratchett, dive into Nick and Pher’s weekend at Kitsune Kon, lament CHI-FI’s inability to do PR or communicate, get amazed by the antics of Fantasticon Milwaukee, talk about the No Boys Dorm Kickstarter, entertain the idea of the “Con Man” webseries, and get confused by Mallrats 2 being a thing.
Also, Sony is screwing up the Ghostbusters franchise, big time.
On this episode, we talk about three conventions (Kitsune Kon, Karoshi Con and The INDYpendent Show), Shaq Fu 2, first looks at Gotham, set photos from Age of Ultron, the new Ninja Turtles Trailer, and we let Nick talk about Gundam.
