Sony’s ‘Masters of the Universe’ Remake Gets a Release Date

One of the most puzzling projects to come out of Hollywood’s obsession with rebooting every bit of IP from the 1980s is the Masters of the Universe remake over at Sony. It’s been brewing for a few years, and honestly I think a small part of me had been hoping that the film would disappear into development hell. I mean, I just honestly can’t think of the market for this sci-fi Conan rip-off. Nostalgic fans have rejected prior remakes, and the casual audience doesn’t remember it as fondly as they did, say, Transformers.

But it’s still coming, and now it has a release date.

It’s being reported that Sony has put Masters of the Universe on their release schedule for December 18, 2019. Of course, even though this is in many ways a step forward for the film, it seems that some vital elements are missing.

McG had been attached to direct the film, but he’s no longer involved in the remake. And while Jeff Wadlow had completed a script for the film in 2015, as David S. Goyer is apparently now writing the film, it’s safe to assume Wadlow’s script has been thrown out. But hey, this thing that no one really wants is still happening.

I wonder if it will fare any better than The Lone Ranger

Five Reasons to LOVE the ‘He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special’

We all need some joy in our lives right now, and as you find yourself sitting through the week between Christmas and New Years, you might consider digging into some classic Holiday specials. Nick Izumi thinks so too, which is why he’s decided to give us five reasons to love one of his favorites.

And by that, I of course refer to the He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special.

So sit back, make some cocoa, and listen to Nick explain why you should love this classic toy commercial children’s special. Let the commercialism “holiday spirit” warm your hearts, people. Your cold, black cynical hearts.

Just like Skelator.

Is this Battlecat the First Concept Art From the Live Action ‘Masters of the Universe’ Film?

Look, it’s early days for the Masters of the Universe live action remake, so we don’t know much about the content of the upcoming film. What we do know is that Senior VP of Production at Sony/Columbia Pictures DeVon Franklin tweeted out an image of Battlecat in response to some He-Man tweets.

Is this concept art from the film? No idea. For all we know DeVon Franklin is just a huge He-Man fan and commissioned an artist who normally does images of hyper-realistic Disney princesses.

I mean, sure — concept art is more likely, but I can’t build an entertaining narrative off of that. Anywho, here’s the tweet:

Jeff Wadlow Has Completed a “Masters of the Universe” Script

Masters of the Universe is a property people seem obsessed with dragging back from obscurity, yet it never seems to quite work out. Apparently though, Jeff Wadlow has now completed a script for the seemingly-forever-limbo’d film.

The project was dragged back out again originally with John Chu to direct, but he dropped out when Wadlow was brought on board. The script has been the responsibility of half a dozen writers up to this point, and who knows whose work remains in the current draft.

Do we really need a Masters of the Universe reboot? Probably not. Honestly, the target demo is aging (and seemingly uninterested in a sci-fi Conan rip-off) and every other attempt to bring it back has failed miserably.

Frankly, this is all probably a terrible idea.
