Holy Crap, ‘The New Mutants’ Trailer is Friggin’ Dark

So when it was first announced that Fox was making a New Mutants movie, most of us were expecting a coming of age film in superhero clothing. I mean, the comics started out about a group of new recruits at Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters learning to use their powers.

That is not what this movie is going to be.

The first trailer for The New Mutants has now dropped, and to say that director Josh Boone took things in a different direction would be an understatement. What we’re getting looks more akin to a horror film, and that’s pretty damned neat. It’s clear with the success of Deadpool and Logan the studio is willing to take risks with the franchise, and hopefully this one will pay off for them too.

The New Mutants comes out April 13, 2018.

Fox Making a ‘New Mutants’ Movie

According to Deadline, Fox has decided to (unsurprisingly) keep milking the X-Men license as much as it can – now with a New Mutants film.

Josh Boone will direct, and he’ll co-write the script with Knate Gwaltney.

Created by Chris Claremont and Bob MacLeod in 1982, the New Mutants are an offshoot of the X-Men. Ostensibly just a set of teenage students at Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters trying to learn to control their powers, they somehow always managed to find themselves in danger.

Or something.

I never read New Mutants.

The film is in early stages and won’t come out for several years, but it just goes to show that licensing the X-Men and its derived properties was probably the best move Fox ever made.
