Episode 110 – Unexpected Attacks

On this episode of Nerd & Tie we tackle Marvel’s New Warriors‘s search for a new network, give a spoiler free review of Thor: Ragnarok, contemplate Zachary Levi’s casting in Shazam!, and consider CBS All Access rebooting The Twilight Zone. We also talk about how Libya’s second annual Comic Con was shut down by an armed militia.

So yeah, things had to get a bit serious at the end.

Marvel’s ‘New Warriors’ (Featuring Squirrel Girl) Is Looking for a New Network

Marvel’s New Warriors television series (which will feature Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl) is apparently searching for a new home. The show was originally ordered straight to series by Disney owned family oriented network Freeform, but the cable network couldn’t find a home for it in their 2018 lineup.

And Marvel really wants it to air in 2018.

The complicating factor is that there’s a rumor that Marvel isn’t allowed to shop their new shows to non-Disney owned networks. Marvel denies this (and it would certainly make life complicated for Netflix and Hulu regarding future deals), but if it’s true New Warriors may have a rocky road ahead of them.

Besides Vayntrub, the show’s cast also includes Derek Theler as Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe, and Kate Comer as Debrii. The show apparently has tested extremely well internally at Marvel/Disney, and it would be a shock if it never aired.

We just have no idea where it’ll end up.

Milana Vayntrub Cast as Squirrel Girl in Freeform’s ‘New Warriors’ TV Series

A few months ago we learned that Freeform had ordered a comedic television series based on Marvel’s New Warriors. What got us most excited about this though was finding out that the series would prominently feature Doreen Green — aka Squirrel Girl. As Squirrel Girl is the single best character in all of Marvel’s comics canon, getting to see her on screen finally is kind of a big deal. Our biggest question was, as you’d expect, who the heck is going to play her?

Well, it looks like we have our answer.

Marvel has announced that Squirrel Girl will be played by none other than Milana Vayntrub. Vayntrub has appeared in a number of projects, but honestly most of you probably know her from playing Lily in the AT&T commercials. Really, in my opinion, where she shined brightest was as Tina in Other Space.

If you haven’t watched Other Space yet, do so immediately.

The announcement also mentioned that cast will also include Derek Theler as “Craig Hollis/Mister Immortal,” Jeremy Tardy as “Dwayne Taylor/Night Thrasher,” Calum Worthy as “Robbie Baldwin/Speedball,” Matthew Moy as “Zack Smith/Microbe,” and Kate Comer as “Deborah Fields/Debrii.” And while that’s a pretty great lineup for the show, here at Nerd & Tie it just kind of faded into the background as we all thought about how wonderful it will be to see Squirrel Girl on screen.

New Warriors is slated to debut in 2018 on Freeform.

Episode 96 – Complete Con Chaos

On this, our officially longest ever episode of Nerd & Tie, we celebrate Invader Zim‘s impending return, discuss John Simm’s returning as The Master on Doctor Who, lose our minds over the New Warriors television show (featuring Squirrel Girl), contemplate Rainn Wilson’s casting as Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery, and speculate on the possibility of a Joss Whedon written/directed Batgirl movie.

Then we tackle the con scene, where Angry Goat Productions continues to do things that are absolutely insane, and AnachroCon’s management seems to have devolved into complete anarchy. We also talk about the great time we had at Karoshi Con, and look forward to No Brand Con.

Plus, y’know, there’s a mailbag. This episode is just full of stuff.
