On this (audio only) episode of Nerd & Tie, your three hosts have gathered in the Wisconsin Dells to do an episode of the show live at No Brand Con 2017! We discuss the first trailer for The Last Jedi, celebrate the return of Mystery Science Theater 3000, contemplate Monica Valentinelli and Tad William’s withdrawal from Odyssey Con, and marvel at the fall of Rocky Mountain Fur Con.
We were tight on time, so there’s not a lot of audience interaction – but we did remember to mock Arcemise.
On this, our officially longest ever episode of Nerd & Tie, we celebrate Invader Zim‘s impending return, discuss John Simm’s returning as The Master on Doctor Who, lose our minds over the New Warriors television show (featuring Squirrel Girl), contemplate Rainn Wilson’s casting as Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery, and speculate on the possibility of a Joss Whedon written/directed Batgirl movie.
Then we tackle the con scene, where Angry Goat Productions continues to do things that are absolutely insane, and AnachroCon’s management seems to have devolved into complete anarchy. We also talk about the great time we had at Karoshi Con, and look forward to No Brand Con.
Plus, y’know, there’s a mailbag. This episode is just full of stuff.
We’re not doing as many cons this Spring as we have sometimes in the past, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be out in the world! The three of us are going to be hitting up a couple of cons in the upcoming weeks, and we want to make sure you know where we’ll be.
First off, all three of us will be at two different cons in April:
Karoshi Con – April 8, 2017
Northern Illinois University – Dekalb, IL
No Brand Con – April 21-23, 2017
Chula Vista Resort – Wisconsin Dells, WI
It’s unknown if we’re doing a live show at either event, though there will be (at the very least) “secret podcasts” recorded at both events. Also, you will find Gen and I (Trae) in the Artist Alley at both events, and Nick helping his wife’s table at Karoshi.
I will also be on my own at the INDYpendent Show in Indianapolis, IN on Sunday, April 2nd. The INDYpendent Show is a small press and independent comics show held in conjunction with Who’s Yer Con, and admission is free.
On this installment of The Off Week, rather than spend seven to ten minutes with Trae talking about something… how about spending almost a full hour with Trae talking about something? That’s right, this installment is most of Trae’s “Webcomics A-Z” panel from this year’s No Brand Con.
The panel is a basic primer on starting a webcomic, from both the creative and technical end, and it’s totally worth watching if you want to get into the (completely non-lucrative) industry.
“The Off Week” is a series of videos produced by Nerd & Tie in the weeks where we aren’t producing a full length podcast. The goal is to raise questions and make you think about things that you’ve maybe taken for granted.
Recorded before a live audience at the lovely Chula Vista Resort in the Wisconsin Dells, on this live episode of Nerd & Tie we discuss the first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer, let Nick fanboy about the Godzilla Resurgence trailer, continue to look closely at the ever living clusterf**k that is Wine Country Comic Con, roll our eyes at YourMiniCon’s mounting issues, and contemplate Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s title.
Oh, and we talk directly to some of you while you’re in the room — and try to start a rumor that Sean Corse of Famicom Dojo got mauled by a gazelle.
Live shows are fun like that. No Brand Con shows especially.
So we’re heading to No Brand Con tomorrow in the Wisconsin Dells. As per normal, we’re bringing the full show of awesomeness, and Pher and Nick are doing their Otaku Tonight thing too… so yeah it’ll be fun.
And I totally copied that first paragraph from our post about this from last year. I mean, with a tweak to the city name, but still.
All con long, you can stop by the Nerd & Tie Expo table and register for our upcoming convention in Eau Claire, WI. Pher will be there most of Friday and Saturday, and Nick and Trae will be there at various points throughout the weekend. Some of the Nerd & Tie team you never see publicly will be there too — and they want to be your best friends.
Nick and I (Trae) will be scattered throughout the Artist Alley as well, so you should stop by their tables and say hello. It’s fun. But besides random table sitting, we’re doing panels too. Here’s our full schedule! Continue reading Find us at No Brand Con 2016!→
On this episode we mourn the passing of Admiral Ackbar himself Erik Bauersfeld, rejoice in the LEGO Batman movie trailers, and question the petition to bring the R rated cut of Batman v Superman to theaters. We also jump straight into the con scene, remembering the Twin Cities’ closing Thunderbird Hotel, comment on the cancellation of yet ANOTHER Yourminicon event, lament issues with this year’s Karoshi Con, and celebrate Who’s Yer Con and the INDYpendent Show for being awesome.
So we know it’s a tad last minute, but did you know you could spend Sunday, April 3rd with either Nerd & Tie’s Nick Izumi or me (Trae Dorn)? Well, you can! Both Nick and Trae are going to be at two different events at the same time — in two different cities!
Nick will be at Karoshi Con at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL. You can find him in the vendor room at the Ineffective Carnivore table, and I’m certain he’d love to see you. Ask him how his wedding was (spoilers: it was awesome).
I (Trae) will be elsewhere, down at the Spring INDYpendent Show in Indianapolis, IN. Held in conjunction with Who’s Yer Con at the Wyndham West Hotel and Convention Center, I’ll be selling comics and doing demos on Sunday. I will also tell you about Nick’s wedding if you want, but I’m not sure why you’d ask me.
So yeah, it’s all very exciting. For those of you who want to see us in the same place though you’ll have to wait a little longer… and by that I mean two weeks when No Brand Con comes around in the Wisconsin Dells.
Hey look, it’s Throwback Thursday — that feature we used to do every week, but now only do it when we remember to get around to it! In this installment of the ongoing testament to my laziness, I’ve pulled up an old con report from the video archives — No Brand Con 2007 to be specific.
Man I was young back then.
Anyway, enjoy the four minute flashback — and remember, Nerd & Tie will (mostly) be at No Brand Con again this year, even though it’s now in the Wisconsin Dells. If you’re feeling nostalgic for a convention in Eau Claire, I may have a different con you might be interested in too…
It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time for our third annual year in review episode! We discuss the best and worst 2015 had to offer when it comes to movies, new television shows, Anime, video games, comics and (of course) conventions! Find out what Nick, Trae and Pher really liked and what they really, really hated…
It’s super fun.
Also, someone finally guessed the damned book Trae’s been reading for so many months — and they went to too much trouble to do so. But we kind of love them for it, so it’s really okay.
