‘Wonder Woman’ Crushes Box Office With $100.5 Million Opening

One of the films we’ve been most nervously excited for this year is, of course, Wonder Woman’s first solo feature film. There haven’t been that many women led superhero movies, and Hollywood is often reluctant to trust women directors with tentpole blockbuster. Wonder Woman, with director Patty Jenkins at the helm, has a lot riding on it.

And thank the heavens things are actually working out.

Wonder Woman opened to a pretty amazing $100.5 million domestically, which breaks the record for the biggest opening for a film directed by a woman. The movie has also already brought in $122.5 million internationally, for a total gross of $223 million so far. Considering the film only had a budget of $150 million (and the conventional wisdom that a film must make back twice its budget), Wonder Woman is already well on its way to be considered a rousing success.

Oh, and by the way, the movie’s really, really good.

It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s definitely a good one. Gal Gadot’s performance is captivating and triumphant, and the film’s portrayal of Wonder Woman’s first steps into the world of man captures the essence of Diana of Themyscira better than some of us could have dreamed. If you haven’t seen it yet, you really should. Get off the computer/tablet/phone you’re reading this on, and go watch this movie immediately.

Maybe I’ll go see it again too…

Episode 45 – Completely Pherless

On this episode of the podcast, some MRAs have been kicked out of Calgary Expo, Syfy is ditching wrestling, Wonder Woman is switching directors, we’ve got a whole mess of new trailers to discuss, Trae went to the INDYpendent Show and we talk about our plans for No Brand Con next weekend!

And Pher got sick last minute, so he isn’t here. It’s just Trae and Nick.

And Trae had to quick edit the episode’s title card, much to Pher’s sadness.

Patty Jenkins is the New Director for ‘Wonder Woman’

Just days after finding out Director Michelle MacLaren is officially off of Wonder Woman, we now know (thanks to THR) who her replacement will be: Patty Jenkins.

Jenkins, amusingly enough, had been previously attached to Thor 2 before splitting with Marvel over creative differences. She’s best known for directing Monster (which got Charlize Theron an Oscar) and her work on The Killing.

Personally, I think she’s a good choice, and I’m glad Warner Bros and DC are sticking with a woman director. I’m also happy they made the move quickly, especially if Wonder Woman is going to pull off a 2017 release.
