So Keira Knightley is Definitely Back in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’

One of the biggest problems with the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film was how its story felt so disconnected from the prior three films in the franchise. I mean, the other complaint was that it just wasn’t very good, but not having Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner or Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann probably didn’t help all that much.

The fifth film has obviously been trying to rectify that, with Bloom’s character confirmed to reappear and Will and Elizabeth’s son featuring prominently – but we’ve all been assuming Knightley wouldn’t be back (as the studio hasn’t made any announcements). Then we got a Japanese trailer for the film, and guess who briefly shows up:

That’s right, she’s back. Though honestly I think we can assume it isn’t in a major role. I mean, if a film was going to prominently feature Knightley, you’d assume she’d be all over the advertising already. The fact that it’s a brief shot in an international trailer implies that she’s only making a cameo.

I’m betting in a flashback.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Has a New Trailer

Disney decided to go back to the well for a fifth time with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and today they’ve dropped a new trailer for the film. Unlike the previous teaser trailer we got last fall, this one actually gives us some backstory for the film’s villain (and an explanation for why he’s after Jack Sparrow).

Honestly, while the rousing theme of “He’s a Pirate” gets me into the trailer, I have to question whether or not this entry will be worth it. The fourth movie was fairly disappointing, and recapturing the magic of the first three movies is going to be incredibly difficult.

But hey, at least Orlando Bloom is back this time.

This Year’s Geeky Super Bowl Ads You May Have Missed

Look, it’s commonly accepted wisdom that only a minority of nerds and geeks really care about organized sports. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with liking sports, but it’s just not as common in our community as it is in the rest of the general populace.

Let’s get started then. Continue reading This Year’s Geeky Super Bowl Ads You May Have Missed

The First ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Trailer is Here

The first trailer for the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise came out this weekend, and as it’s full of dead pirates taking over a boat hunting for Jack Sparrow, the series seems to be going back to its roots.

Honestly, while I knew on an intellectual level that this movie was happening, I think a small part of my brain was refusing to accept it. I mean, do we really need (or want) another Pirates movie? The original trilogy was pretty enjoyable, but the fourth installment was kind of terrible. Now in a world where Disney’s bread and butter is milking franchises, there was no way they were going to let this potential money maker collect dust.

Hopefully they do a better job this time around.
