For years Marvel fans have been clamoring for a standalone Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson. She’s an Avenger, she’s been in like half a dozen Marvel movies, and for a franchise without a lot of women-led films she’s the obvious choice. After years of waiting though, it looks like we may finally get one.
Marvel currently has a Black Widow movie in early development. The film will, of course, star Johansson and Jac Schaeffer has been tapped to write the screenplay. It’s all early days, but this is a good sign. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn out like the SNL spoof version they made a few years ago.
Just a general pro-tip to people who are trying to promote anything even remotely semi-controversial: don’t let the internet enter whatever text they want into it. You see, Paramount recently launched a site called “I Am Major” in promotion of their upcoming live action remake of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson. The tool lets users type whatever they want (starting with the words “I Am”) over an image of their choice, with the film’s “I Am Major” slogan and the film’s logo appearing at the beginning.
As the casting of Johansson (a white woman) in a role like the traditionally Japanese character of the Major has caused a bit of an uproar, you can probably guess what happened once the general public got ahold of the site.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie we discuss The Inhumans hitting the small screen, Hayao Miyazaki coming out of retirement (again), react to the American Ghost in the Shell trailer, consider the new series Neil Gaiman is developing for Fox, and put our heads together about the possibility of a Snowpiercer television series. We also talk about what a disaster Rewind Con apparently turned out being, and Nick went to Daisho Con.
Also, Pher has a very important announcement about his future at Nerd & Tie. It’s a big deal.
Guys, I know that we haven’t talked about for a while, but that terrible live action remake of the very Japanese Ghost in the Shell starring a bunch of white people is still happening. I know we all tried to forget about it, but it’s still going forward.
The latest news on this atrocity is that the Scarlett Johansson led film is moving studios — from Disney to Paramount.
I don’t know the film industry well enough to know whether this is good or bad for the film, but I know it is a thing that has happened. I hope it’s a bad thing, because as much as I love Scarlett Johansson, she should not be playing the Major.
Right now Ghost in the Shell is scheduled to come out March 31, 2017.
On this installment of Nerd & Tie, we talk about Daredevil getting a release date, Ant-Man’s teaser trailer, the Amazing Spider-Man 3 rumors, the Batman v Superman two movie baloney, both Arrowverse shows getting renewed, Vixen coming to CW Seed, Scarlett Johansson’s casting in Ghost in the Shell, and Masters of the Universe getting a new script.
We also talk about Nick’s experiences at Evercon this weekend, along with Nezumi Con getting absorbed into Anime Milwaukee’s parent organization.
Look, don’t get me wrong – I like Scarlett Johansson quite a bit. She’s an excellent actress with a talent for action. I personally would run around with sparklers screaming “HOORAY FOR EVERYTHING” if Marvel announced a stand alone Black Widow movie starring her.
But that’s not what’s happening.
What is happening is that Variety is reporting Johansson has been cast to star in the forthcoming DreamWorks’ adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the Shell is also something that I love — but it’s a distinctly Japanese property.
With a distinctly Japanese protagonist.
Who should not be played by a distinctly white person.
So yeah, everything is now distinctly terrible, thank you very much. I now hate everything.
