On this episode of Nerd & Tie, Gen Prock is sitting in for Nick Izumi (who is off rehearsing a play). We tackle the full cast announcement of the revived MST3K, Frank Miller’s bizarre desire to make a fourth Dark Knight installment, the trailer for Captain America: Civil War, Supergirl getting a full season order, Kevin Bacon shopping around a new Tremors TV show, and what happened when Pher and Gen went to Daisho Con.
So when The Dark Knight III: Master Race was announced, most of us thought “well that sounds exactly like what Frank Miller would come up with.” You know – because he’s super racist, sexist, and just kind of an all around terrible person.
Well, what’s surprising is that it seems like Miller had very little to do with Master Race. Miller’s recent comments to Newsarama suggest that even though Miller is listed as a co-writer, Brian Azzarello did the heavy lifting. And came up with the story. And pretty much wrote the whole damned thing on his own.
I’m pretty much certain that Miller’s “writing” on this consisted purely of the ridiculous title.
But fear not people who had hoped to see Frank Miller spiral into a fit of crazy in the pages of a Batman comic (again), as Miller wants to come back and write a fourth installment in his Dark Knight series — and this time write it all on his own<. An idea which sounds absolutely terrible.
Look, we all know the original The Dark Knight Returns was pretty great (or at least we all remember it as being pretty great… I think… we had lower standards back then), but Frank Miller has long since gone round the bend. When a third installment in the Dark Knight series was announced last spring, we all kind of rolled our eyes.
And not just because it will be titled “The Master Race.”
Anyway, Miller will thankfully not be drawing the new comic… but DC did let him draw the cover for “The Atom” minicomic that will be packed in with the first issue. And… well… this is what happened:
So besides the fact that Superman looks like he’s been run over by an Acme branded steamroller, you can also clearly see the outline of Superman’s junk.
God damn it, Frank. This is why we can’t have nice things.
On this episodes we break things down into the Good (show renewals), the Bad (show cancellations) and the Unexpected (which is what it sounds like). Listen to and watch us celebrate iZombie, Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD all getting new seasons. Listen to us lament the loss of Constantine… and Helix.
Then we get to Red Dwarf‘s two new upcoming series, a Myst TV show, and a thoroughly unneeded third installment in Frank Miller’s Dark Knight saga.
We also share our thoughts on No Brand Con and read the biggest mailbag in a long while.
DC has decided that modern perceptions of Batman aren’t grimdark enough, so they’ve decided to go back to the well and have Frank Miller write another Dark Knight installment.
While the original Dark Knight Returns is a classic, the follow up Miller wrote in the early 2000s was mediocre at best. And what do they plan on calling this unnecessary sequel? The Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
Seriously. That’s what it’s called.
Honest to god, you can’t make this stuff up.
Brian Azzarello will cowrite the series, and no artist has been announced yet. The first issue should hit shelves in the fall of this year.
