Netflix’s newest entry into the MCU is the forthcoming The Punisher series. And while we’ve gotten a couple of trailers, there have been some concerns that the streaming service would delay the show’s release in the wake of one of the largest mass shootings in American history (which did prompt the cancellation of the show’s panel at New York Comic Con).
Well, it looks like Netflix is marching forward, releasing another trailer for the show and finally giving us a solid date for when the first season will be released: November 17th.
Honestly, it’s a Punisher series. As long as this country continues it’s ongoing problems with gun violence, there probably won’t ever be a tasteful time to release a show about a white guy with an arsenal who shoots lots of people. It’s one of the reasons I’ve never been too fond of the character. Based on their track record though, Netflix is capable of putting enough nuance in the series where I’m more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I guess we’ll all find out when The Punisher comes out in a month.
If there were any concerns that Netflix’s The Punisher would be a sanitized version of the character, they can be easily dismissed. While we got a teaser after the credits of this August’s The Defenders, the streaming service has released the first full trailer for the show.
It’s very, very dark and very, very bloody.
And if you’re a fan of The Punisher, that’s probably exactly what you want. I mean, as bullets fire to the beat of Metallica’s “One,” it’s hard to imagine any other way this series could more accurately capture the tone of the character. That said, it will be interesting to see how audiences react to the show, considering how much darker it is than the rest of the Marvel properties.
The Punisher season one is expected to hit Netflix this November.
This weekend I’m sure most of you sat down to branspike/binge the latest Netflix Marvel series The Defenders. I mean, the streaming service has been building towards this for years, and the show is kind of amazing. What you might not have noticed (or maybe you just haven’t gotten there yet) is that Netflix shared a teaser trailer for their next Marvel series, The Punisher, after the credits of the final episode.
It’s been ripped from Netflix and reposted to Youtube a bunch of times, so we’re not sure if it’ll stay online. It’s only a minute long, but it’s a great little look at the tone of The Punisher. I’m excited about the show, and I’ve never really even liked the character.
The Punisher is expected to be released this fall.
Jon Bernthal’s turn as The Punisher in season two of Netflix’s Daredevil was incredibly well received, so no one was surprised when a solo series starring the vigilante was green lit. Filming wrapped on the series back in April, and fans have been waiting patiently to find out when we’d get to see the final product.
While Netflix hasn’t said anything official yet, a rough window for that release date may have now slipped. Dearbhla Walsh, who directed an episode of the upcoming season, was talking with The Hollywood Reporter when she offhandedly said (on a question about shooting in North America):
One other time that hasn’t been aired yet, which was an episode for the new Marvel series The Punisher, which I did just before Christmas, but it’s not airing until November
Now this is far from official, but it would fall in line with Netflix’s previous releases of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. It’s also entirely possible that Walsh is repeating information given to her back when she was filming, which means it may very well have changed since then. Still, it’s a good sign for the series that fans are looking for even the vaguest indication of when the show is finally going to get here.
Netflix’s corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been pretty resoundingly well received by the fandom, with one season of Jessica Jones and two seasons of Daredevil under its belt. But with so many series in production (as the cumulative franchises head towards The Defenders) and only so much room on the calendar, the question about when we’d see more of the already released series has been floating in the air.
Well, the good news is that season three of Daredevil and season two of Jessica Jones are still on track — but the bad news is that we won’t see them (or The Punisher) until at least 2018.
It makes perfect sense when you look at the schedule though, as Luke Cage comes out this fall, and Iron Fist and The Defenders coming in 2017. Netflix has been pretty clear that they want to put out two Marvel seasons a year, and this sticks with their pattern.
And with the quality of what we’ve gotten, is it such a terrible burden to wait?
Marvel announced today that Jon Bernthal has been cast in Daredevil‘s second season as Frank Castle.
Frank Castle, of course, is also known to comic fans as The Punisher. As Marvel took back the rights to the franchise a few years ago, many fans have been awaiting Mr. Castle’s official debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… and I guess now we know how it’ll happen.
Bernthal is best known for his performance as Shane on AMC’s The Walking Dead, and is kind of perfectly cast here in my opinion. He’s charismatic enough to make you like him, while able to simultaneously make you feel like he’s going to turn around and shoot everyone in the head if you don’t pay attention to what he’s doing.
I wonder if he’s like that in real life…
Anyways, Daredevil season 2 is expected to debut on Netflix in 2016.
