The Tremors franchise came out of hibernation last year with Tremors 5: Bloodlines. The revival must have made money, because Tremors 6 was apparently greenlit, and it starts filming next week. Series star Michael Gross posted the following to Facebook yesterday:
NEXT WEEK, Jamie Kennedy and Burt Gummer are off to South Africa to film the latest Tremors sequel. Hope to keep you up to date on our goings-on (without giving away any secrets, of course). I have been silent for many weeks, and will fill you in on the details in the next few days. A happy new year to family, friends and fans.
Kennedy’s character was introduced in Tremors 5, and his appearance may be a tad divisive for long time fans of the series. Not everyone was fond of his appearance in the fifth movie, so we’ll see how this effects the die hards. Honestly, there’s a lot of the DNA of the fifth installment going into this, as that too was shot in South Africa.
It should be pointed out that Tremors 6 doesn’t seem to have any relation to the new Tremors television series in development at Amazon (which is being put together by Kevin Bacon). But you know what? The more graboids the better.
On this episode of Nerd & Tie, Gen Prock is sitting in for Nick Izumi (who is off rehearsing a play). We tackle the full cast announcement of the revived MST3K, Frank Miller’s bizarre desire to make a fourth Dark Knight installment, the trailer for Captain America: Civil War, Supergirl getting a full season order, Kevin Bacon shopping around a new Tremors TV show, and what happened when Pher and Gen went to Daisho Con.
Kevin Bacon may have co-starred in the cult favorite Tremors, but he’s avoided showing up in any of the sequel films or the 2003 TV series. In fact, one of the best parts of Tremors 2 is Christopher Gartin having to constantly explain to people that he’s not Kevin Bacon’s character.
Needless to say then, you could color me pretty damned surprised when I found out that a new Tremors TV series is in development… starring Kevin Bacon.
Universal Cable Productions and Blumhouse Productions are shopping the project around to multiple networks, but no word on where this show might find a home. We don’t know a lot about the show itself beyond Bacon starring, Andrew Miller writing it, and the setting being Perfection, NV. We don’t know how much continuity will remain from the previous installments in the franchise (although I’m hoping they keep it), and, hell, have any of them called Michael Gross yet? Showing up in things called Tremors is literally Michael Gross’s thing.
I have a bizarre love for the tongue in cheek Tremors franchise. Maybe it’s because the original film was the first rated R film I ever watched as a kid, maybe it’s because they literally named one of the monster’s forms an “Assblaster.” Whatever it is though, I am officially excited about the forthcoming straight to home video Tremors 5.
The film will star Michael Gross (the only consistent actor between the other four films and TV series) and take place in South Africa.
