Trek Off: Comparing ‘The Orville’ to ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

It was 2005 the last time a new episode of Star Trek aired on TV. Let that sink in.

The franchise has been off the air for more than a decade, and after not only all this time, but also a lackluster 50th Anniversary celebration, fans have been desperate for any new Star Trek. These last couple of weeks would see Trekker’s wishes granted though, not only by the debut of Star Trek: Discovery, but also by The Orville, an obviously Trek-inspired spoof produced by and starring Seth MacFarlane.

Over the last few months, as rumors of issues behind the scenes plagued Discovery‘s PR, some fans joked that with The Orville we would be able to get at least one good Star Trek show. Now that both are out, I think its time to put that theory to the test. We’re going to compare the debut episodes of these two shows to see which one is the better Trek. So ‘The Orville’ Looks Entertaining, But I Don’t Trust It

So at San Diego Comic Con, Fox premiered a new trailer for The Orville, Seth Macfarlane’s new science fiction comedy. It looks fun, it looks exciting, it looks really entertaining… and I don’t trust it for a second. You see, I remember the earlier trailer we got back in May which started the same way… right up until MacFarlane opened his mouth.

I mean, I’ll still give the show a shot. I’ll tune into an episode or two, but it comes down to something simple — Seth MacFarlane hasn’t really been funny for the last fifteen years (at least), and continues to write and perform in a mold which is outdated and (frankly) annoying to watch. We’ll see what happens, but I don’t have a lot of faith in his abilities at this point.

I guess we’ll all find out when the show premieres September 10th on Fox.

The Trailer for Fox’s ‘The Orville’ Looks Great… Right Up Until Seth MacFarlane Opens His Mouth

Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville is coming to Fox whether we like it or not. We now have a trailer for the show, and to be fair, the show itself looks great. The problems start when MacFarlane opens his mouth and reminds us all that his jokes are very much stuck in what passed for edgy humor twenty years ago.

Toilet seat jokes! Men and women are different! Hilarious.

I’m still going to try and give the show a shot, because I like the premise. The cast looks great too (Scott Grimes is in it — he played recurring character Jimmy O’Rourke on Republic of Doyle). But I keep going back to the fact that Seth MacFarlane is super gross, and I get pulled out of it.

I guess we’ll find out how it goes when the show premieres later this year on Fox.

Adrianne Palicki Joins Cast of Seth MacFarlane’s Sci Fi Comedy Series

Former series regular of Agents of SHIELD Adrianne Palicki has now officially joined the cast of Seth MacFarlane’s upcoming Science Fiction dramedy. The series has already been ordered for a thirteen episode season by Fox.

MacFarlane is starring as Ed, the captain of a starship, and Palicki will play Kelly, his first officer and wife. Scott Grimes has also joined the cast, and will play the ship’s pilot.

Honestly, while this is wonderful casting news (as Palicki is extremely talented), MacFarlane’s writing isn’t exactly the best. Frankly, Ted 2 was one of the worst films I had to sit through in a long time, only topped by Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain. While I would like to be pleasantly surprised, I’m pretty damned skeptical about this show.

I guess we’ll find out what happens though.
