Freeform’s television adaptation of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger comics may not be premiering until 2018, but that hasn’t stopped the network from putting out the show’s first trailer. The show, which follows a pair of runaways from vastly different backgrounds who end up with superpowers, has a ten episode order at the cable network.
People have been trying to adapt this comic for the screen going back to 2011, when it was initially intended to air on broadcast network ABC alongside a version of Jessica Jones. Needless to say these adaptations have taken divergent paths to eventually make it to audiences.
The trailer itself gives us a tease of our two main characters, Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Ty (Aubrey Joseph), but with only minor flashes of the “superhero” angle of the show. Mostly it’s a moody trailer about a couple of runaways with a flash of superpowers at the end. Is it enough to whet the appetite of the (creepily named) “becomers” demographic Freeform is targeted at? I’m not sure.
Family friendly network Freeform ordered a TV adaptation of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger last year. The series titular characters are a pair of runaways from vastly different backgrounds who end up with superpowers. Okay, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but that’s the one sentence summary version.
We now know who the cast is going to be for the series too, which is expected to go into production soon. To start with, Marvel actually announced that Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph would be filling the main roles of Tandy and Tyrone two weeks ago. Yesterday, Marvel filled out the rest of the cast as well.
To start with Andrea Roth will play Tandy’s mother Melissa Bowen, with Gloria Reuben and Miles Mussenden playing Tyrone’s parents Adina and Michael Johnson. Carl Lundstedt will play Liam, Tandy’s “partner in crime” and boyfriend. The rest of the cast fills out with James Saito as Dr. Bernard Sanjo and J.D. Evermore as Detective Connors. It’s a solid looking cast, and a promising start for the series.
Cloak and Dagger is expected to premiere on Freeform in 2018.
In what is a fairly familiar story, people have been trying to adapt Marvel Comic’s Cloak and Dagger to screen for a while now. Most notably ABC was trying to bring it to series in 2011 (alongside Jessica Jones). Well the series is finally going to see the light of day, and like Jessica Jones it won’t be on ABC as was originally intended.
Of course, unlike the aforementioned Jessica Jones the series isn’t landing on Netflix — instead on the family friendly Freeform network (which you may remember as its previous name ABC Family).
Those hoping for a “dark and gritty” version of the characters may end up disappointed, but the romance angle of the property fits well into Freeform’s targeted 14-34 year old demographic (which apparently gets referred to as the creepy sounding label of “Becomers”).
This will be Freeform’s first live action Marvel property, co-produced by Marvel Studios and ABC Signature Studios. No one has been signed on to write the project yet, though the search is under way. It’s also not known whether or not the series will take place in the MCU along with ABC and Netflix’s shows.
It will be interesting to see where this one goes.
