The Second Trailer For ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Looks Frigging Amazing

We got the first trailer way back in April, but now Lucasfilm has finally given us a second tease for the forthcoming eighth entry in the Skywalker saga. That’s right, last night a new trailer for The Last Jedi dropped, and it’s amazing.

I could describe the contents of the trailer, or break down everything in it — but I think watching it cold is a much better experience. Let yourself be surprised, and just enjoy the thing. It’s pretty damned awesome.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15, 2017.

Episode 97 – Live at No Brand Con 2017!

On this (audio only) episode of Nerd & Tie, your three hosts have gathered in the Wisconsin Dells to do an episode of the show live at No Brand Con 2017! We discuss the first trailer for The Last Jedi, celebrate the return of Mystery Science Theater 3000, contemplate Monica Valentinelli and Tad William’s withdrawal from Odyssey Con, and marvel at the fall of Rocky Mountain Fur Con.

We were tight on time, so there’s not a lot of audience interaction – but we did remember to mock Arcemise.

He deserved it.

The First Trailer For ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Is Here, and It’s Spectacular

Breathe, just… breathe. The first teaser trailer is now here for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it’s exactly what we needed. First shown earlier today at Star Wars Celebration, like the trailers for The Force Awakens it doesn’t give too much away. It does however whet our appetites for the film so sharply that December can’t come soon enough.

I don’t want to speculate too much (or spoil the trailer before you watch it), so you should really just put the video on. I rewatched it three times right now, and I’ll probably do so again. I am very, very excited about this movie.

Episode 93 – The Digression Paradigm

On this episode of Nerd & Tie we discuss how Bill Paxton’s passing, Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s new season getting a release date, the addition of Generation 2 to Pokemon Go, Matt Reeves taking over The Batman, Syfy launching reality series Cosplay Melee, how “Jedi” is plural in The Last Jedi, and how Angry Goat Productions quietly cancelled their Sailor Moon Themed events.

Because who would have guessed that the company that cancels all of their events would cancel another.

So It’s Pretty Clear That ‘Jedi’ in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Is Plural

Since its reveal, the semi-cryptic title for the eighth episode in Star Wars‘s Skywalker saga has left many guessing as to what or who “The Last Jedi” is. The problem comes down to language, as Jedi is both the singular and plural form of the noun. This means that “The Last Jedi” could refer to one person, a group of people, or even (as John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats posits) the Ultimate Jedi who wastes all the other Jedi and eats their bones.

Well, we now have a clue now thanks to the film’s international titles.

You see, while English for the most part doesn’t modify it’s articles or adjectives based on the singular of plural status of a noun, a lot of other languages do. As we have now learned that the French title for the film is Les Derniers Jedi and the Spanish title is Los Últimos Jedi. For both of these, while they directly translate to “The Last Jedi,” the forms of “the” and “last” both are in their plural forms. We see the same thing in the German (Die Letzten Jedi) and Portuguese (Os Últimos Jedi) titles as well.

It’s pretty clear that the title refers to multiple Jedi then, and not just Luke Skywalker. We kind of expected this though, especially considering Episode VI’s title (Return of the Jedi) used it as a plural too, referencing both Luke’s taking up the mantle and Anakin’s redemption. Honestly I expect it refers to both Luke and Rey (who is clearly his new apprentice), as well as a reveal of more details surrounding Kylo Ren’s fall.

But hey, that’s just speculation at this point.

A New Performer Has Taken Over the Role of R2-D2

With the passing of Kenny Baker last year, Lucasfilm needed a new performer to take over operating R2-D2 in the Star Wars films. I mean, sure they could go completely electronic or CGI with the character as they have with BB-8 and K2-SO, but there’s just something special about a human operator squeezing themselves into that tiny shell.

THR is reporting that the performer filling those shoes is none other than Jimmy Vee.

Jimmy Vee is best known for his multiple appearances on Doctor Who and the Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s going to be difficult taking the reigns from the late Baker, but it’s pretty clear he’s up to the task.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters this December.

The New Theme For Episode VIII is “The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All the Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones”

Apparently John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats was joking around with Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson about the title of the film, and… well… a song happened. You see, apparently “The Last Jedi” is actually the Ultimate Jedi that all Jedi eventually have to confront, and that Ultimate Jedi kills and eats the bones of every other Jedi.

You see, he needs the calcium.

And man, that Ultimate Jedi going to be pretty annoyed when he finds out Kylo Ren’s been just been burning the bones of his enemies. I mean, that’s just a waste when you think about it.

Episode 91 – Titan Sized Edition

On the longest episode of Nerd & Tie so far, we mourn the passing of John Hurt, Warner Bros wants to make an American live action Attack on Titan, Star Wars Episode VIII finally has a title, the Axanar lawsuit has finally been settled, Jughead apparently isn’t asexual in Riverdale, Comic Excitement Convention flops, Phoenix Comicon has changed its staffing policies a second time, Angry Goat Productions is looking either incompetent or shady, and Evercon has filed for a restraining order against Scott Windorski.

This is a big one, so strap in.

Star Wars Episode VIII Finally Has a Title

After months of speculation, we finally know what the eighth episode in the ongoing Skywalker-saga Star Wars will be titled. Earlier today, StarWars.com announced:

We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.

Writer and Director Rian Johnson has previously teased that this title was selected from the very beginning, so it’s finally nice that the rest of us are being let in on it. Lucasfilm also released the following logo for the film:

Honestly? It’s a good title. I mean, I’m sure someone is going to whine about it somewhere, but that’s inevitable these days I guess. It’s also interesting that they’ve chosen to cast the “Star Wars” logo in red instead of the traditional yellow (though its obviously not the first time in the franchise history).

Episode VIII, or as I guess I get to call it now “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” hits theaters December 15, 2017.

Star Wars Episode VIII Cast List Announced, Production Teaser Released

We loved Star Wars: The Force Awakens here at Nerd & Tie, and are all pretty hyped up about any news regarding its as-of-yet-untitled follow up. Well, more news is finally coming in, as earlier today Lucasfilm announced the cast for the upcoming Episode VIII:

Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

They also put out the briefest of teasers for the film as well. Here’s hoping we can actually get a title soon though, so I can start referring to it by something more specific.

Star Wars Episode VIII comes out December 15, 2017.
