‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Sequel Announced

With a $65 Million Dollar opening weekend (the fourth largest ever for August) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seems to have overcome the nerd-rage and turned out to be a financial success. As I said on the podcast yesterday, it’s not actually a bad Ninja Turtles film. In fact it’s one of the better ones, so I’m glad it overcame the negative press prior to its release.

It helps that there’s an entirely new generation of TMNT fans watching the current cartoon to go along with the nostalgia viewers.

With such a successful opening (which would look huge for August if Guardians of the Galaxy hadn’t just blown all August box office records out of the water a week before), it should come as no surprise that Paramount has announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 with a premiere date of June 3, 2016.

According to Variety, screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec will return for the sequel, and it will again be produced by Bay’s Platinum Dunes (which will again be fine as long as Bay himself keeps out of the major creative decisions). We don’t know if Jonathan Liebesman will return to direct, and no cast news has been announced (although it’s likely most of the cast including Will Arnett and Megan Fox will return).

We just know a date.

And that’ll have to do.
