Quick Aside About Misogyny in Geek Culture

So we’ve been pretty quiet about the undercurrents of misogyny that permeate some corners of geek culture — and it’s kind of a big deal, so we know that we should… but time is finite and at least I haven’t been able to get to it. So rather than write nothing, I thought I’d direct you to this article over at Comics Alliance which should be mandatory reading.

And lest you only think this kind of crap happens with the Video Gamers, remember that Harrison’s Comics in Salem, MA has a room that the manager calls “The Rape Room” – so yeah. It’s pretty bleak all around.

Let’s try to do better, shall we?

And by “better” I mean tell those members of our community who think that it’s acceptable to make threats to go f**k themselves.

Trae Dorn

Trae Dorn has been staffing conventions for over twenty years, and is a co-founder of Wisconsin’s longest running Anime convention No Brand Con. Trae also wrote and drew the now completed webcomic UnCONventional, and produces the podcasts BS-Free Witchcraft, On This Day With Trae, Stormwood & Associates, and The Nerd & Tie Podcast. This leads many to ask when the hell they have time to actually do anything anymore. Trae says they have the time because they “do it all quite poorly.”
